Drowning prevention strategies for all

#1 Supervision

There is no substitution for adult supervision when children are around water.  Adult supervision is the best preventative measure to prevent drownings.  This means no eyes on cell phones, no leaving children unattended (even for brief periods), and no distractions of any kind.

#2 Education

While supervision should never be compromised, things do happen, including distractions.  Therefore, education for both children and caregivers is crucial to preventing and responding to emergencies in the water.  Kids should learn basic self-rescue skills via certified water safety programs.  Caregivers should be trained in CPR and First Aid via nationally recognized programs such as the Red Cross or American Heart Association.

#3 Barriers

Water still poses a danger, even when not being used.  Having self closing, self locking fencing around backyard pools can prevent unwanted exposure to the water for little ones.  Secured pool covers or netting can also aid in keeping children out of the pool when it in use.  Other measures such as alarms on gates or back doors can help catch the attention of adults if a child makes a move toward the pool.  Finally, it’s important to remove ladders from above ground pools when not being used.
